Also included is a “Lost Motion Compensator,” which the action company Wessel, Nickel and Gross action built into the top-line piano actions. This mechanism allowed the player to use the “soft” pedal without introducing lost motion in the key, which always happens with vertical pianos without the compensator.

IVERS AND POND was one of the finest Boston piano makers. This Model 56 is an early 20th century example of the company’s special advances - the agraffe duplex, lost motion compensator (for soft pedal use without creating lost motion), and the extensive use of brass rails to stabilize action regulation and maximize tonal output.
