    The factory registers of five American manufacturers, Chickering and Sons, Knabe and Co., Steinway and Sons, Mason and Hamlin, and Baldwin Piano Co.,  stand out for examination due to their distinctive contribution to American musical and cultural life, manufacturing staying power, presence on the concert stage, university, conservatory, and performance venues, and recognition for quality of manufactureThis paper represents  the early stages of a study of these manufacturers, more an “in-progress” or “state of the study” report.
